Abstract

Local history can be exploited for increasing students’ awareness and interest in the region they live in. By learning it, students can expand their knowledge about uniqueness of the region, such as its culture and local wisdom. One of the sources that can be used as a tool to study local history is the cultural heritage site of Pelawangan, in Sidoarjo, East Java. This paper analyzes the use of the site for local history learning. This study was conducted by applying qualitative method with historical approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and literature study. The results show that by making the site as a source for learning local history, students gained new knowledge about the cultural uniqueness and local wisdom in the history of their region. In this case, one of the uniqueness is in the form of trees used as a tetenger (marker) of the hidden site. By studying tetenger, many ancient sites of the Majapahit era can be found.
